Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday signed a constitutional reform decree barring people with dual nationality from running for the presidency, state governorships or head of government of Mexico City.
The decree, previously approved by the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies and ratified by the required number of state legislatures, was to be published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on Wednesday. Although the decree takes effect upon publication, the new rules will apply beginning with the 2028 electoral process.
"Today we signed the decree ... stating that no president or governor may hold dual nationality," Sheinbaum said at the signing ceremony held during her daily press conference at the National Palace.
Under the reform, anyone seeking those top elected offices must renounce any other nationality before registering their candidacy with Mexican electoral authorities.
The measure was promoted by Sheinbaum's administration as a way to prevent foreign interference, according to Luisa Maria Alcalde, the president's legal counsel.
