When a bridge became a battlefield: Retracing the Long March

Ninety years ago, Luding Bridge saw one of the most famous battles of the Long March. After covering 120 kilometers in a day and a night, the Red Army arrived to find the bridge stripped of its wooden planks, leaving only 13 iron chains above the Dadu River. Twenty-two soldiers crawled across the chains under enemy fire, while local people helped the rest of the troops make it across.

Ninety years later, CGTN’s Yang Xinmeng finds two bridges standing side by side over the Dadu River. The new one carries people across every day. The old one remains much as it was, cared for by generations of local people. Through VR, visitors can get a sense of what that crossing might have felt like for those Red Army soldiers.
