A Chinese mainland spokesperson said on Monday that no matter what Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te says or does, he cannot change the inevitable demise of "Taiwan independence" or stop the trend toward China's reunification.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks at a regular press conference in response to a question about Lai's so-called "Double Ten speech" on October 10.

There is only one China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory, Mao said, adding that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China.

Upholding the one-China principle, opposing "Taiwan independence" separatism and supporting China's reunification are the prevailing sentiment and shared aspiration of the international community, she said.

Mao said the so-called "democracy" invoked by Lai cannot conceal the nature and truth of his "Taiwan independence" agenda.

The true status quo across the Taiwan Strait is that both sides belong to one China, Mao said, adding that no words or actions by Lai could change the historical and legal fact that Taiwan belongs to China.
