From 50,000 to 100,000: How youth exchanges bridge China-US ties

What can American students discover about China beyond the headlines?

They are finding answers through classroom conversations, cultural encounters and everyday campus life. Their experiences offer a glimpse into how youth exchanges can turn curiosity into understanding and differences into opportunities for connection.

In 2023, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced an initiative to invite 50,000 young Americans to China for exchange and study programs over five years. According to China's Ministry of Education, more than 50,000 had already come to China by May 2026, achieving the original goal ahead of schedule. The target was subsequently raised to 100,000.

From the classroom to the basketball court, these encounters show how people-to-people exchanges can help build bridges between China and the United States, one conversation at a time.
