"Building Safe and Resilient Homes" – the theme of the 37th International Day for Disaster Reduction, observed on October 13, 2026 – highlights the importance of disaster resilience at the household and community levels and the need for stronger capacity in disaster prevention, preparedness and emergency response.
China is contributing practical, people-centered solutions to global disaster governance. Its earthquake early warning public service system now covers over 400 million users, including over 228 million mobile phone users receiving direct alerts, according to data released by the China Earthquake Networks Center in July. The system is now being upgraded with artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technologies to improve the speed and accuracy of early warning.
AI is also accelerating disaster response. The "Diting" seismic wave large model automatically identified 452 pre-earthquake events and 429 aftershocks during the magnitude-6.8 earthquake that struck Dingri County in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region in January 2025, according to the Earthquake Science International Data Center.
Meanwhile, the Belt and Road International Cooperation Mechanism for Disaster Risk Reduction and Emergency Management, established in November 2023, has expanded from 27 countries to 34 countries and three international organizations, with cooperation results benefiting more than 80 countries across five continents, according to the mechanism’s council meeting held in November 2025.
Technology is a key part of China's contribution to global disaster governance. In 2025, China's Fengyun meteorological satellites provided services to 133 countries and regions, according to the China Meteorological Administration. The Fengyun international emergency service network now has 37 members, with annual international service data exceeding 50 terabytes. China also conducted 159 remote sensing emergency monitoring operations in 2025, completing over 5,700 satellite imaging tasks and providing more than 1,600 scenes of data to foreign countries, according to the China National Space Administration in December 2025.
In addition, China has provided earthquake early warning and safety assessment services for major projects including the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway, the China-Myanmar Oil and Gas Pipeline, and Pakistan's Gwadar Port. Chinese rescue teams have also taken part in major international disaster relief operations, including those following the earthquakes in Türkiye in February 2023.
From resilient homes to global watch, China is turning local experience into shared capacity for a safer world.
