Guizhou's 'Auntie Basketball' helps forge cross-Pacific friendship

More than 20 women from Leishan and Taijiang counties in southwest China's Guizhou Province – known as the "Auntie Basketball" team – traveled to the US for a basketball and cultural exchange from September 28 to October 7. They brought their unique basketball tradition and the spirit of friendship and fun to communities across the states of California, Nevada, Utah and Washington.

Their journey was also a reunion two years in the making. In 2024, a youth delegation from Washington state visited Guizhou and played a friendly game with the "Auntie Basketball" team in Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture. This time, the friends met again in the US, where basketball, traditional dances and Miao songs helped build new connections and continue a friendship across the Pacific.
