Built in 1869 by the order of Emperor Meiji, the Yasukuni Shrine remained under military control until the end of World War II. Today, it enshrines more than 2.466 million people, including 14 Class-A war criminals. At the Yūshūkan Museum located inside the complex, the revisionist narrative that "this was a war to defend Japan" is still promoted, while Japanese politicians continue to pay visits. Who, exactly, are they honoring? This film takes us inside the Yasukuni Shrine, hearing from Buddhist monks, historians and war survivors about whom it commemorates – and what kind of history it seeks to glorify.
