China urges EU to show sincerity in resolving trade issues

CGTN

Both China and the European Union (EU) should show sincerity in solving problems, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce said on Friday, urging the EU to work with China to promote the healthy and stable development of bilateral economic and trade relations.

The spokesperson made the remarks in response to a question about the EU summit's proposed "dual-track" approach toward China, which combines continued intensive consultations with increased restrictions, including the possible use of the bloc's anti-coercion instrument.

China-EU economic and trade consultations aim to properly resolve differences through dialogue and consultation while taking each other's concerns into account, the spokesperson said.

The understanding reached between China and the EU on hybrid vehicles was based on three principles agreed upon by both sides: compliance with World Trade Organization rules, a fact-based approach and non-discrimination. It was mutually beneficial and reciprocal, safeguarding the practical interests of Chinese enterprises while addressing EU concerns and preventing an escalation of trade frictions, the spokesperson said.

The claim that EU pressure had produced results was entirely groundless, the spokesperson said, adding that the EU should not expect to gain benefits through pressure or underestimate China's determination and ability to safeguard its own interests.

China urges the EU to work with China in the same direction to promote the healthy and stable development of bilateral economic and trade relations, the spokesperson said.
