China urges Japan to abandon nuclear weapons ambitions

Asia;

China has criticized Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for remarks suggesting Japan could consider allowing nuclear weapons into the country.

Speaking on Wednesday, Takaichi said there was room to revisit a 2010 statement by then-Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada on the possibility of allowing US forces to bring nuclear weapons into Japan under exceptional circumstances.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Friday that the remarks reveal the Japanese government's growing nuclear ambitions and risk undermining regional and global peace and stability.
