China's first multi-generational rice cultivation experiment in space marks a new step toward humanity's ability to grow food in orbit. After more than four months of cultivation aboard China's space station, the Shenzhou-23 crew collected and stored a new batch of rice samples and planted some of the harvested space-grown seeds. The experiment aims to grow rice through two successive generations in microgravity, and study the molecular mechanisms behind its genetic stability and environmental adaptability. In 2022, the Shenzhou-14 crew completed the world's first full life-cycle rice cultivation experiment in space, harvesting 59 first-generation space-grown seeds. The second-generation space rice is expected to mature during the Shenzhou-24 mission.
