To mark the 90th anniversary of the victory of the Long March, China Media Group (CMG) has produced a gala, which pays tribute to the Red Army's crossing of Jiajin Mountain through a stage drama.
One of the gala's highlights is the performance of Jiajin Mountain, where actors vividly portray the heroic feat of crossing the mountain, which is brought to life with the help of modern stage technology.
In June 1935, with single-layer clothing and scarce food supplies, the vanguard of the Central Red Army crossed Jiajin Mountain, the first major snowbound mountain they encountered on the Long March. Facing the perpetually snowcapped mountain, with an altitude of 4,114 meters, they also had to deal with other challenges, including thin air and extremely changeable weather.
Nine decades later, the builders of the new era carried forward the spirit of the Long March by conquering a list of world-class challenges. After the tireless work of more than 600 construction personnel over the course of 45 months, the National Highway 351 Jiajin Mountain Tunnel was completed, solving the generations-old problem of local people having to cross the snowbound mountain.
The Long March took the Red Army soldiers across 14 provinces, over 18 mountain ranges and across 24 major rivers. They slogged through swamplands, traversed snow-covered peaks and covered a distance of roughly 8,000 miles – over 12,000 kilometers – mostly on foot.
