China Media Group (CMG) launched an AI platform for producing and releasing multilingual short dramas and animated series at the International Audio-Visual Arts Gala in Shanghai on October 18.
Held at the Shanghai Exhibition Center, the closing event of the International Audio-Visual Arts Carnival showcased projects combining technology and artistic creation.
The platform draws on large AI models and multilingual language resources. CMG also announced an AI animated series project using the platform, featuring its virtual presenter Lydia on a journey across civilizations.
Shen Haixiong, vice minister of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and president of CMG, and Shanghai Mayor Zhu Zhongming addressed the event and jointly launched an international initiative for audiovisual co-creation.
Shen said CMG's partnership with Shanghai combines its content production capabilities with the city's technological strengths and cultural heritage. He pledged deeper cooperation to support cultural innovation through technology and promote international exchanges.
Zhu said Shanghai would strengthen content production and focus on AI-assisted short dramas, immersive audiovisual experiences and next-generation television. The city will also improve copyright protection, talent development and support for new projects.
In a video address, Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union Secretary-General Ahmed Nadeem said generative AI, ultra-high-definition video and other emerging technologies were transforming content production and audience experiences.
Other announcements included a joint project to develop a technology and content services platform for immersive dome displays. Planned for Shanghai's Jing'an District, it will feature a 55-meter-diameter ultra-high-definition LED dome within a large column-free space.
The event also presented a Chinese-developed GPMI connectivity solution that links multimedia devices through a single cable. It supports simultaneous two-way transmission of audio, video, data and control signals while supplying power.
A separate initiative called for digital inclusion, stronger international cooperation and a more sustainable audiovisual sector.
Immersive performances combined audiovisual technologies with artistic expression, while a light show used Shenyuli's traditional stone-gate architecture as a backdrop.
Jointly organized by CMG and the Shanghai municipal government, the carnival began on September 24, featuring performances, discussions and interactive experiences.
CMG reported cumulative attendance of more than 3 million across related activities. It also reported year-on-year sales growth of more than 30% across the West Nanjing Road, Suhewan and Daning commercial districts.
