Authorities in Laukkai, the capital of the Kokang region in northern Myanmar's Shan State, have organized officials and community workers to watch a Chinese documentary on the crackdown on telecom fraud in northern Myanmar as part of a public safety education campaign in recent days.
Titled The Demise of Telecom Fraud in Northern Myanmar, the documentary was jointly produced by China Media Group (CMG) and the Ministry of Public Security. It has revealed the brutal conditions inside telecom fraud compounds in northern Myanmar and detailed how Chinese police moved to dismantle major criminal groups operating there.
Laukkai, which borders southwest China's Yunnan Province, was once home to numerous telecom fraud compounds and was one of the main hotspots for telecom fraud in northern Myanmar. The documentary features extensive footage filmed in Laukkai, documenting the crimes committed by telecom fraud gangs and the crackdown that dismantled these criminal networks. It records how China's crackdown on telecom fraud has helped restore stability along the China-Myanmar border and has sparked a strong response in Myanmar.
A Laukkai resident who wished to remain anonymous said the documentary had helped people better understand the harm caused by telecom fraud.
"It's encouraging to see these cross-border fraud gangs being taken down. It's the right thing to do and helps protect countless families," the resident said. "The Chinese government is clearly determined to crack down on these crimes. People in Laukkai should cherish the peace and stability we have today."
