Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a temporary ceasefire in the frontline city of Oleshky brokered by First Lady Melania Trump, the White House announced on Friday, saying it will begin on October 29.

The deal aims to address a humanitarian crisis in the Russian-controlled Dnipro River city, where a dwindling population of mostly elderly residents faces acute shortages of food, water, and medicine.

"Both nations agreed to temporarily stop all military action in Oleshky to allow for humanitarian aid to enter and to prepare a civilian evacuation through a designated safe passageway," said a statement issued by the Office of the First Lady.

"The situation in Oleshky is dire. Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster," said Melania Trump in the statement.

"Non-military, civilian leaders from both countries will work together to visit Oleshky residents in their homes and determine the level of assistance they require. Residents who wish to evacuate will receive coordinated support and transportation to their preferred destination," she said.

Russia's General Staff announced a military "silence regime" taking effect on October 27, two days before the White House date for the localized cessation of hostilities.

Ukraine's human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets also said the ceasefire would go into effect on October 27 and told Reuters the operation would involve demining roads to the town, deliveries of food and evacuations of civilians.

Oleshky, located across from the city of Kherson, which remains under Ukrainian control, has been held by Russian forces since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in February 2022. Residents have reported worsening shortages of food and other essential supplies amid continued fighting.

The humanitarian breakthrough coincides with renewed diplomatic channels, following separate talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US special envoy Steve Witkoff regarding potential trilateral negotiations in November, according to the Kremlin.
