The Red Army entered the vast Songpan Grasslands in northwestern Sichuan Province after crossing several snow-covered mountains. There were no towering peaks to climb, nor established roads to follow. Hidden marshes and hunger shadowed every step. Sometimes, the hardest thing of all was simply to grit one's teeth and keep putting one foot in front of the other.
