Former Israeli PM: West Bank operation won't change voters' attitudes

The Israeli military has begun demolishing Palestinian buildings in Hebron after two Israeli soldiers were killed in an attack by two Palestinian gunmen at a checkpoint outside the city.

Three other soldiers were wounded before the gunmen were shot dead, officials said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the military would "destroy" the neighborhood the attackers came from and that Israel was ready for "extensive action" in the occupied West Bank.

Speaking to CGTN, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert called the attack "a very, of course, terrible event" that Israelis of all political blocs oppose. He said necessary measures must be taken to stop such attacks, but that this "is not going to change the attitude of the voters."

Israelis go to the polls next week in the country's general election.
