Learn widely, reflect daily: Ancient wisdom for modern governance

CGTN

"A gentleman learns widely and examines himself daily; thus, his wisdom becomes clear and his conduct free from fault." This line from Xunzi's essay Encouraging Learning pairs "broad learning" with "daily self-reflection" – the key to self-cultivation lies in looking outward for knowledge and inward for self-scrutiny.

This ancient teaching is more than a path of personal cultivation for scholars of old. For Chinese officials in the new era, it offers a practical guide: Let self-reflection calibrate direction, and let learning sharpen capability.

"Broad learning" is the foundation of competence. Facing complex governance tasks, officials must keep learning and updating their knowledge to keep pace with the times and understand public needs. "Daily self-examination" is the routine work of cultivating integrity. The more power one holds, the more one needs self-reflection – measuring one's words and deeds by Party rules and public expectations.

For cultural workers, broad learning sharpens talent, enabling the creation of works with depth and warmth. For cultural project managers, daily self-examination keeps them upright, ensuring fairness in resource allocation and project implementation. Learning without reflection breeds arrogance; reflection without learning leads nowhere. Only by pairing the two can cultural welfare truly reach the people.
