Film and sports are finding more ways to work together. The China Film Administration and the General Administration of Sport recently rolled out new policies to deepen ties between the two sectors. Plans call for sports-themed film screenings paired with major tournaments and public fitness drives, plus more opportunities for filmmakers and athletes to join public welfare events.
Cinemas are also stepping up as venues for live sports. During the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted across Canada, Mexico and the United States, over 1,400 cinemas in 266 Chinese cities streamed more than 28,000 live match broadcasts according to CCTV News. These big-screen viewings drew fans together and helped cinemas fill quiet late-night slots that usually see thin crowds.
