Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Icelandic Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir in Beijing on Thursday, calling on the two sides to push bilateral ties into a new stage.
Stressing that this year marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said China and Iceland should strengthen exchanges on governance experience and take the anniversary as an opportunity to advance bilateral relations.
Wang noted that the key to developing China-Iceland relations lies in upholding equality among countries regardless of size, respecting each other's independently chosen development paths, and pursuing mutually beneficial cooperation based on mutual trust.
China is willing to share development opportunities with Iceland and deepen cooperation in trade, geothermal energy, the green transition, marine affairs, and Arctic affairs, while strengthening exchanges in tourism, joint research, and talent development, Wang said.
In the face of the current turbulent international situation, Wang urged the two sides to strengthen coordination, jointly uphold multilateralism, the rule of law in international affairs and the central role of the United Nations in international affairs,
He also called for promoting a more just and equitable global governance system and making new contributions to safeguarding world peace and stability.
