Golden rice ears are drying in the autumn sun in Huanggang Village, an 800-year-old settlement of Dong people in Liping County, southwest China's Guizhou Province, named a Best Tourism Village by UN Tourism in 2025. Wooden drying racks line the village as locals harvest and hang fragrant glutinous rice to dry, creating a striking golden landscape amid traditional wooden stilt houses and centuries-old granaries.
As a key production area for Liping fragrant glutinous rice, a nationally recognized geographical indication product in China, the village preserves traditional farming practices. In recent years, local authorities have turned the seasonal harvest tradition into a driver of rural tourism, offering visitors a glimpse of Dong culture while creating new opportunities for local businesses and farmers.
