At the World Wrestling Championships in Astana, Asian Games champion Hong Kexin made quick work of Sena Nagamoto to win the women's freestyle 57kg title. In the process, she secured China's first gold medal of the 2026 edition.
23-year-old Hong sprang into action from the start, executing her signature leg attack with precision while aiming directly for Nagamoto's weaker left leg. Just 30 seconds in, she locked onto her opponent from behind, executing a flawless turn for a quick two points. Hong's relentless approach paid off, as she repeatedly returned to the same move, swiftly building a commanding 8-0 lead.
The contest was brought to an early end when Hong established a 10-point advantage. Although the referee awarded two additional points, the mat chairman intervened, ruling that Nagamoto was not fully turned. Undeterred, Hong resumed her leg attack, securing another two points to end the match just 30 seconds into the second period. Having previously settled for bronze medals at both the Paris Olympics and at last year's championships, this gold medal finally fulfills her aspirations for elevation in the sport.
In other events, Feng Ziqi and Feng Yongxin bolstered China's medal tally, each securing bronze medals in the women's freestyle 50kg and 65kg categories.
