The ongoing 2026 Shanghai-Xinjiang Cultural Exchange Week showcases the rich cultural traditions, performing arts and culinary specialties of Shanghai and northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, bringing the two regions closer through cultural exchange. Running through November 5, the event uses culture and food as bridges to deepen cooperation between the two regions under China's paired assistance program and promote exchanges and interaction among different ethnic groups.
Visitors can enjoy traditional Xinjiang music and dance performances, including the Twelve Muqam, and take part in an immersive traditional Xinjiang wedding experience. A food market features a variety of Xinjiang specialties, such as kebabs, roast whole lamb, grilled lamb chops, baked buns and hand-pulled naan bread, alongside local favorites from Zhoupu Town, including lamb dishes and traditional pastries.
The event also showcases intangible cultural heritage, including Atlas silk weaving and traditional medicinal tea-making, with hands-on activities such as lacquered fan painting, offering visitors more opportunities to experience the cultural charm of both regions.
