Paris curfew begins after largely peaceful protests

Police patrolled Place de la Republique in Paris as a curfew took effect at 11 p.m. on Saturday in the public square and Chatelet-Les Halles areas, restricting movement until 6 a.m. on Sunday. The measure came amid protests over living costs, fuel prices and inflation, and followed looting and property damage during earlier unrest. Most marches across France were peaceful, but clashes broke out near Porte de Charenton in Paris as demonstrators dispersed.
