China Walkthrough: In Xiamen, mangroves bear witness to harmony between humans and the sea

Global Stringer

From November 5 to 11, 2026, Xiamen will host the 2026 Xiamen International Ocean Week. The event is being held under the theme "Join hands to protect the deep blue: Harmony between people and the sea." CGTN invites foreign vloggers and residents to hold in-depth discussions from multiple perspectives, including marine biodiversity conservation and marine ecological protection.

In this episode, Colombian vlogger Fernando Munoz Bernal visits the Xiatanwei Mangrove Park in Xiang'an District, Xiamen, exploring Fujian's largest artificially reconstructed mangrove ecological park. With a mangrove planting area of about 85 hectares, the site has gone through years of systematic ecological restoration projects, forming a mangrove ecosystem with complete structure and full functions. Today it serves as an important habitat for the protection and improvement of marine biodiversity.

Fernando says, "Here in Xiatanwei, harmony is not a slogan; it's 85 hectares of roots that are holding the shoreline, it's 76 bird species that are finding a home and millions of visitors learning that a degraded mudflat can become a thriving forest once again. Xiamen's ocean story is still being written."
