How far can the human body really be pushed on stage? Behind the elaborate makeup of Chinese opera lies relentless, high-impact athletic mastery. On set at the China Wulin Conference and Jinhua City Theatre Festival, Wu Opera artist Cui Yaqian reveals the intense physical endurance demanded of traditional performers.

Performing as the Goddess of the Water in The Siege of Sizhou, Cui tackles a rapid succession of high-stakes martial routines – from lightning-fast dual-sword strikes and intricate whip passes to high-flying spear-kicking techniques in flawless ensemble sync.

"During combat scenes, these high-difficulty routines are the hardest part for me," says Cui on set. "They are also the skills I have practiced the most." Visceral, explosive, and precise, her performance captures Chinese opera at its physical peak.
