Along the Yangtze River in Tongling, Anhui Province, local authorities are rolling out some of the country's toughest environmental measures to protect the endangered Yangtze finless porpoise and restore the river's aquatic ecosystem.

Two policies lie at the heart of this approach:

A 10-Year commercial fishing ban: Under China's national Yangtze fishing moratorium, commercial fishing along the Tongling stretch of the Yangtze River is banned through 2030, with a permanent ban inside core reserve zones.

Ban on recreational angling: In Tongling, even casting a line for fun is off-limits along the Yangtze's main channel. Here, all line fishing and recreational angling is banned to remove risk of hook injuries to aquatic life.

Together, these measures ensure the river remains a safe, undisturbed sanctuary for the species that call it home.
