As China accelerates its green energy transition, gas turbines are emerging as a key partner. At the 9th China International Import Expo (CIIE) held in Shanghai, CGTN Digital journalist Shen Shiwei spoke to Frank Yan, general manager of product and engineering at GE Vernova Gas Power China, on why this technology still matters. Yan noted that while renewables are vital, their output fluctuates with weather. Gas turbines start quickly, offering stable, efficient operation to balance the grid. He also highlighted their lower emissions, with natural gas plants producing less than half the carbon of coal-fired ones. Looking toward China’s carbon goals, he pointed to hydrogen as the next step: by 2030, gas turbines able to burn 100% hydrogen will enable near-zero emissions, securing their role in China's future low-carbon power system.
