In April 2000, three nature reserves in Xiamen, southeast China's Fujian Province, were brought together to establish the Xiamen Rare Marine Species National Nature Reserve, creating a more integrated approach to protecting precious wildlife and their habitats.

Covering 7,588 hectares, the reserve is home to 22 species of nationally protected wild animals, including Chinese white dolphins, Xiamen amphioxus, peregrine falcons, greater coucals, Saunders's gulls, Chinese egrets and Merops philippinus. Among them, three species are under first-class state protection and 19 under second-class protection.

By integrating multiple protected areas, Xiamen has built a stronger, more comprehensive sanctuary for rare species, helping safeguard marine biodiversity and the ecosystems they depend on.
