A Friday terror attack that killed 23 soldiers and injured a dozen more has prompted the Egyptian government to extend a curfew in the North Sinai region near the Gaza Strip for the duration of a nationwide state of emergency in place until the end of September.
The curfew will start at 7 p.m. and end at 6 a.m., except in the capital Al-Arish and the International Road area, where it begins at 1 a.m. and ends at 5 a.m.
Friday’s attack was claimed by ISIL-affiliated militant group Sinai Province.
Earlier last week, Egypt’s House of Representatives approved an extension of a nationwide state of emergency, after a police officer and two conscripts were killed by a roadside bomb in North Sinai.
A separate state of emergency in North Sinai was first implemented by a presidential decree issued in October 2014.
