The corruption court in Islamabad has sentenced former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to 10 years in prison. Sharif is being fined 8 million pounds over the purchase of up-scale flats in London. Sharif was ousted from his third term as PM by the Supreme court last year following a corruption investigation. Danial Khan has the details.
DANIAL KHAN ISLAMABAD "An accountability court announced the verdict in the corruption case, sentencing former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to 10 years in jail for owning assets beyond known income. The corruption allegations against the then-ruling family rose out of documents in the notorious Panama Papers back in 2015 - revealing family ties to offshore companies and foreign properties. Friday's sentencing pertains to the purchase of four flats in Avenfield House, Park Lane, London, and was among three cases filed by the National Accountability Bureau against Sharif and his children on the Supreme Court's orders. His daughter Maryam Nawaz was given 7 years for abetting a crime after she was found concealing the properties of her father. Nawaz's son-in-law retired Captain Safdar Awan was given one year jail time, for not cooperating with the investigation. As the 9-month-long trial concluded, Nawaz was handed a fine of 10-and-a-half million dollars. The money will go into the state treasury. The court ordered the properties in London to be confiscated by the federal government. The verdict also bars the family members from running for office - and strikes Maryam from the ballot in National Assembly elections set for later this month. All were sentenced in absentia. Sharif and his daughter are in London, where Sharif's wife is undergoing cancer treatment. Safdar is in Pakistan, but did not attend the proceeding. Sharif told reporters he will return to Pakistan to appeal the conviction. Danial Khan, CGTN, Islamabad."
