ANA Inspiration: Lindberg (-8) grabs lead in opening major of LPGA season
[]
Over to golf and the first major of the LPGA season. Little-known Pernilla Lindberg was able to fire home a pair of birdies in her final two holes to grab a one-shot lead at the ANA Inspiration. The Swede is really a surprise front-runner as she has never won in 9 years on tour, but is the golfer to catch after 18 holes.
That is a look at the Rancho Mirage course in California.
Olafia Kristinsdottir would have the shot of the day on the par 3 17th hole, as she steps up and fires away and aces the hole -- which is worth a high-five. But the Icelander is eight shots off the pace.
Japan's Ayako Uehara would have a solid start to her round, this is her birdie on 9, her 18th hole, which gets her to 6-under and a tie for the lead at one point.
She would fall back and sit tied for second, a little further back is American Jessica Korda, she birdies here, and signs for a 5-under 67 and is in a group tied for fourth.
China's Feng Shanshan had a decent round, this is a birdie chance on number seven which she drains, and is at even par at that point. She would finish the day at 1-under.
So Lindberg is your lead, at 7-under, with a couple of golfers right on her heels at minus-6. Lexi who lost a playoff last year after incurring a four-stroke penalty for replacing her ball in the wrong spot is three back of the leader.
Over on the PGA tour, the final tournament before their first major -- the Masters next week sees Sam Ryder leading the charge, sitting at 8-under through 15 holes. The opening round was suspended due to rain storms. Rickie Fowler among the notables in the chasing pack, two off the pace.
