9 days to go until the Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year and millions are traveling across China to get home. Today alone, more than 10 million trips by train are expected nationwide. Airports are also busy, as about 80-percent of all flight seats are booked. And in southern China's Guangdong Province, thousands of migrant workers are hitting the road by motorbike as they head home for the holiday. CGTN's Omar Khan has the story.
20 years old, one motorcycle, and some 200 kilometers ahead of him. Mo Youjian is riding home solo ahead of the Chinese New Year. His journey passes through here, the city of Zhaoqing, renowned for being a pit stop for the hundreds of thousands of migrant workers that head home for the holiday by motorbike, each year.
MO YOUJIAN MIGRANT WORKER "Just be safe when we get home, the police will be with us on the road."
Originally from a small town in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Youjian came to Guangdong Province as a carpenter last year. Over the past 12 months, he saved up for this bike, opting for a two-wheel ride when making the journey home.
OMAR KHAN GUANGDONG PROVINCE "For migrant workers heading home, the luxury of having a vehicle isn't always available. For folks like Youjian hitting the road by bike, means getting home faster."
But luckily for this youngster, getting home comes with a helping hand. Since 2003, Zhaoqing authorities have provided more and more services at the motorbike pit stop, all free of cost.
VOLUNTEER ZHAOQING MOTORCYCLE PIT STOP "The power company is providing phone chargers and blow dryer, basically anything related to electricity. We are also making sure all the service stations and street lamps along the way get power supply."
VOLUNTEER ZHAOQING MOTORCYCLE PIT STOP "We are providing repairing and maintenance service for the bikers passing here."
At last after several hours on the road and a few stops, Youjian is home and reunited with his family.
The next month will be all about catching-up, enjoying local Guangxi cuisine, and ringing in the Year of the Pig with loved ones, all until he has to make the journey back to Guangdong.
