Longtan Park Temple Fair: Families celebrate Spring Festival at fair

Spring Festival would not be complete without spending the day at a temple fair. Our reporter Jenny Cortes Ybañez visits one of the main fairs in Beijing, at Longtan Park, to get in on the action.
At this time of year, China's rich culture and traditions are in full display during the Spring Festival. The Longtan Temple Fair is among those traditions. It has been going on for 35 years, part of the Chinese New Year celebrations. Countless families come together to enjoy all the attractions and festivities. This year they have a Snow Sports Arena with exhilarating ice activities for the young and old, a recreation stage for cultural performances and plenty of food and drink stalls selling Beijing delicacies and other snacks.
"We enjoy the traditional crafts, like the rabbit god figurines. My daughter is young so it's necessary for her to absorb our traditional culture."
"In this year's fair, I've noticed vendors are putting more modern twists on traditional crafts and this widens the selection of souvenirs you can buy. This is something we should appreciate."
"We want to experience the Chinese New Year that's why we're here."
JENNY CORTES YBAÑEZ BEIJING "One of the highlights of this year's Longtan Park Temple Fair is the focus and the collaboration between three regions. It's such a brilliant way to immerse yourself and learn more about Chinese culture."
PERFORMERS FROM SHANXI "It's important that we inherit the traditional arts and pass them on to the next generation, because it's something our ancestors did before us. I've been doing performances since I was a kid."
The capital feels like a "ghost town" compared to how busy it usually is but now we can see why, as it feels like the entire city is at this fete. So the only downside I would say there is to this event is, expect to be shoved around in the sea of thousands and thousands of people. And the queues to buy anything does test your patience. But apart from that, what I've got out of this temple fair is that it gives families and friends a rare opportunity to gather, have loads of fun and above all spend quality time together during the most important holiday in China.
