Back here in China, tourism companies and hotels are busy working to put their best foot forward during the China International Import Expo that begins November 5th in Shanghai. Sun Siqi reports.
Some domestic-based hotels will accommodate world leaders attending the trade fair. Representatives from Shanghai's Tourism Trade Association said some of these historic hotels are racing against time to renovate their facilities.
JIN WEIDE SHANGHAI TOURISM TRADE ASSOC. "Many of the hotels that accommodated guests during the 2010 World Expo are getting a bit old. They are now working to revamp their fire safety equipment, elevators and other public areas. We also had the hotels do cross checks on their competitors. Some of them are lacking human resources, especially technical staff."
The city doesn't lack tourist attractions, but like the hotels, some of them were established in the 1990s and are starting to look old. The companies that manage the attractions are updating infrastructure and sightseeing packages.
FANG AO, OPERATION DIRECTOR SHANGHAI PUJIANG TOUR CO. "We've built a new ship for world leaders to take cruises along the Huangpu River. We are also renovating old ferries. The new vessels will continue to serve guests after the expo. Last month, we launched a longer route all the way to Wusongkou, and we'll have another new route coming out next month. Both routes have bilingual tour guides."
The city's tourism administration said earlier they are working on a system to control hotel price hikes and other bad practices within the tourism industry before and during the event.
