Exclusive interview with HK's first chief executive Tung Chee-Hwa

This week marks the 20th anniversary of the return of Hong Kong to the motherland.
As the first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Tung Chee-Hwa experienced the handover ceremony and has witnessed the development of the city since then.
CGTN's contributor, James Chau, sat down with Tung to find out his views on the city.
Looking back at the past 20 years, Tung said he believed that Hong Kong always could done better and more. 
“The ‘One Country, Two Systems’ policy has been successful in Hong Kong,” Tung said, noting that free market, the rule of law and lifestyles remain unchanged.
“When our country is doing well, Hong Kong will benefit a lot from it.” 
When talking to different voices nowadays about Hong Kong, Tung thinks that the society is more open than 20 years ago, and notes it is normal that everyone has a view as it is natural to have differences.
Tung expressed appreciation to Deng Xiaoping's contribution to the peaceful transfer of sovereignty.
Deng wished to ensure continuity for Hong Kong’s people, Tung said, saying that he thinks everyone should work together to make Hong Kong better.
