We begin today's show with the latest on Friday's deadly landslide in northern China's Shanxi Province. Ten people were killed when their homes collapsed, while many others are either injured or still missing. A massive search and rescue work is ongoing. Our reporter Hu Chao has more.
As of Sunday afternoon, half of the 72 hours rescuers say could be a cut-off point to save lives had passed. A total of seven bodies were recovered from the scene, while three were confirmed dead later in the hospital. Thirteen people have been rescued so far, including young children.
HU CHAO XIANGNING COUNTY, SHANXI PROVINCE "This is a health center in the town and the collapse on Friday occurred just behind it. The houses and shops on this side of the street have all been sealed off, and residents have all been evacuated."
Many nearby residents say they feel afraid.
RESIDENT XIANGNING COUNTY, SHANXI PROVINCE "I feel quite uneasy now. I never expected this could happen. The collapse occurred all of a sudden. And I also feel it's a bit unsafe to live around here."
A man also says he noticed cracks in the walls of his house near to the site of the disaster.
RESIDENT XIANGNING COUNTY, SHANXI PROVINCE "I moved to live in another place over there after the collapse. I lived nearby the collapsed site before it happened. I'm very afraid now. Actually, I already saw cracks on our house last year."
HU CHAO XIANGNING COUNTY, SHANXI PROVINCE "The Xiang Ning County is located in a mountainous area where it's very common to see many buildings built on slopes. It's still unknown whether the construction of the houses is legal or meets safety regulations."
The collapsed buildings were built on land in the Loess Plateau which covers almost all of Shanxi Province. The soft soil has made the site unstable, creating great challenges for rescuers. And due to safety concerns, the rescue operation was forced to stop for a while on Sunday morning. But after experts reassessed the situation, it continued and machinery were brought in to offer a hand at the scene. Hu Chao, CGTN, Xiang Ning County, Shanxi Province.
