Indonesia moves to choke terror funding

Indonesia’s counter-terrorism and anti-money laundering agencies have gathered to combat rising extremism in the country.
In a deal signed in April, the two government bodies sought to strengthen efforts in several areas, including education and the fight against terrorism financing, reported CGTN’s Silkina Ahluwalia.
Indonesia is stepping up its efforts to reduce terrorism, officials said.
In the past year alone, Indonesia has witnessed several major attacks linked to the terrorist group ISIL.
Authorities have found that terrorist groups are using online services such as PayPal and Bitcoin to make their transactions. These forms of financial technology make it difficult to detect and trace the flow of funds.
According to Ali Wibisono, a terrorism and international relations expert, terrorist organizations have now taken a different approach to organize and carry out attacks.
Many organizations are now able to quickly reach out to the younger generation through social media platforms, making it much more complicated for the government to control the situation, said Wibisono.
The problem leaves education one of the most important tools for preventing the spread of extremism in Indonesia, he said.
The new pact between the counter-terrorism agency and several ministries and groups cover many areas, including the development of information technology and educational training.
