Now to Russia, the international air show MAKS 2019 has kicked off near the country's capital Moscow. Turkey has expressed interest in buying Russia's latest stealth fighter jet the SU-57 and Russia is apparently ready to sell it. The presidents of the two countries discussed the possibility during the opening of the airshow. This comes after the U.S. blocked exports of its F-35 stealth fighter to Turkey. CGTN's Aljosa Milenkovic reports.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erogan were front and center at the 14th biennial Moscow Airshow on Tuesday. But the real star at this year's event, designed to showcase Russia's aerospace industry, is the SU-57 stealth fighter jet. The one Russia is happy to sell, and Turkey seems interested in buying. The SU-57 is just one of thousands of exhibits here.
ALJOSA MILENKOVIC ZHUKOVSKY "More than 800 companies from 33 countries are participating. For the first time at the show, China is partnering. In the huge exposition hall, just a few hundred meters away from here, China's major aircraft and space companies are presenting their achievements."
While Russia traditionally exhibits the most at this air show, this year, China is playing a significant role. In its pavilion, China's Comac presented its C919 narrow body airliner that aims to compete with the troubled Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320 NEO. Avic displayed the world's largest amphibious plane the AG600. And China's first private space company LandSpace presented one of the world's most eco-friendly rocket engines.
XU YAWEI, DIRECTOR OF MARKETING LANDSPACE TECHNOLOGY "Currently under development, we are doing liquid oxygen and liquid methane-based launcher which is expected to be launched by the end of the year 2020, or also, let's say most probably, at the beginning of 2021."
China and Russia are jointly working on the wide-body long range aircraft the CR929. A full-scale mockup of the pilots' cabin and passenger compartments was presented here for the first time.
MAKSIM LITVINOV, CHIEF DESIGNER UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION "Final assembly in China, near Shanghai. And we, the Russian side, developed and to produce wing, central wing box, pylons, flaps. China's side is to design and produce body sections and empennage."
It's expected the CR929 will take to the skies in 2023. Aljosa Milenkovic, CGTN, Zhukovsky, Russia.
