Fighting Pollution: China's achievements and plans to reducing pollution
[]
Fighting pollution is one of the three major tasks Chinese officials identified in the nation's pursuit of economic development.
In the past five years, the number of days with heavy air pollution in key cities has been reduced by half. Forest areas have expanded by over 100,000 square kilometers. Formerly dry areas where crops can now be grown have shrunk at an annual rate of 2,000 square kilometers.
One of the major accomplishments in realizing The Action Plan for Air Pollution Prevention and Control. The density of harmful PM 2.5 particles in key areas has dropped by around 30 percent. The density of PM 10 has dropped by nearly a quarter, and sulphur dioxide by over 40 percent in 338 monitored cities.
Chinese officials say the government will continue to reduce air pollution and optimize the nation's energy consumption structure over the next three years. The goal by 2020 is to have good or excellent air quality 80 percent of the year.
