Refiloe Jane is expected to be among South Africa's key playmakers at the Women's World Cup, with pundits singling out the Canberra United midfielder as one to watch, and the vice captain talked to CGTN's Sias du Plessis about her career and goals, before heading to France.
REFILOE JANE SOUTH AFRICA VICE CAPTAIN "Growing up and playing football you always have admirers that look up to you, you know, and me as a youngster, I always looked up to Nompumelelo Nyandeni, and when I see the like of her Nogo, Janine, Amanda, getting to 100 caps, I always dreamed of reaching that stage. And now that I'm here, the journey still continues, it doesn't end here."
"As one of the senior players, do you feel a responsibility or added pressure when you don that famous Banyana Banyana top?"
"Well I think for each and every player, whether you are a senior, or you are a junior, the responsibility is there. The responsibility is to represent nation and represent others also who look up to you, and those who didn't get a chance to be where you are, you know, and looking, going into the World Cup also, you know, the responsibility is there to lead. It's most of us, our first time going to the World Cup. We've got the juniors who have been there, but we've got what it takes to perform at that highest level."
"Let's talk about this group – Spain, Germany, China – tough games."
"You know we have played against tough opponents before. We've played Sweden, we've played USA, Netherlands. We've been in the Cyprus Tournament, we've seen that football is just a game, it's about who takes the chances on that day. Anything can happen. We just need to stay focused, take one game as it comes, and make sure that by the time we kick off the tournament, we will have fully prepared."
"As a role model for women's football, I mean based on Australia, you've done the air miles, let's put it that way, what is your message to young women who want to take up football and one day play for Banyana Banyana?"
"My advice to the young girls who'd love to play for Banyana Banyana in the future is to believe in their dreams, you know, we always preach nothing is limitless, you know, go out there perform your best and you'll never know who'd be watching you on that particular day. Each and every game, just perform at your best, and never give up on your dreams."
