At least ten Egyptian soldiers, including one colonel, were killed in a suicide bomb attack in northern Sinai on Friday, Reuters has reported.
"A car broke into an army checkpoint in the village of Al-Bars, south of Rafah city which borders Palestinian Gaza Strip," said security officials quotes by Xinhua.
The blast was later followed by gunfire from dozens of masked militants.
Around 20 people were wounded in the bombing and shooting, reported Xinhua.
The Egyptian military later said in a statement that a total of 26 soldiers were killed or wounded, but gave no breakdown of the number.
The statement also claimed 40 militants were killed and six vehicles destroyed.
No group or individual has claimed responsibility for the attack.
