The Chinese Foreign Ministry has rejected international criticisms that China's low-interest loans are causing heavy debt issues to some African countries. It says China's cooperation with Africa should be treated fairly.
GENG SHUANG CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESPERSON "The loans are accumulated over the years and not just these past two years. China is not the primary debt owner of Africa. Any country undergoing urbanization and an emerging economy will need financial support. Without a financial guarantee, it will be very hard for Africa to realize such goals. While China's support is focused on infrastructure, construction and other productive areas, it has greatly improved Africa's economic environment, and has helped Africa to attract more investments and become more self-reliant."
