Russia's Foreign Minister has invited DPRK leader Kim Jong Un to visit Moscow. During Sergey Lavrov's first visit to the DPRK in nearly 10 years, he expressed Russia's support in ending years of tension over the country's nuclear program. It comes as the US continues to press ahead with negotiations for a summit. Lucy Taylor has the latest from Moscow.
LUCY TAYLOR MOSCOW "According to news agencies in Russia and the DPRK, the countries have agreed to hold a summit between President Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un, to mark the 70th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the countries.
It comes after Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Pyongyang to show that Russia has a role to play in bringing peace and stability to the Korean peninsula.
Russia has always supported the leadership in the DPRK - and it says sanctions should be lifted if North Korea gets rid of its nuclear weapons programme.
Russia sees a lot of potential opportunities with both North and South Korea, and wants to build economic and trade ties.
Mr. Lavrov says he supports the current changes in relations between Pyongyang and Washington, but it is also concerned about any US attempts to expand its military presence or invade North Korea.
I think this meeting was about Russia wanting to show North Korea that it is a friend worth keeping. LT, CGTN, Moscow."
