China has protested after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe made a ritual offering at the controversial Yasukuni Shrine which honors war criminals.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang on Tuesday urged Japan to consider its military past, saying the country should deeply reflect on aggressive acts against China and other Asian countries and take action to win back the trust of its regional neighbors and the international community.
Abe was expected not to visit the shrine during an annual autumn festival, Kyodo news agency reported.
But since becoming prime minister in late 2012, he has sent ritual offerings during the annual spring and autumn festivals.
The site has for decades been a flashpoint for criticism by countries that suffered from Japan's aggression until its defeat at the end of World War Two in 1945.
No prominent political figures were seen at the shrine early Tuesday.
Abe is in the middle of campaigning ahead of a snap election on Sunday.
