Egyptian animal rights activists held a protest during the weekend. They opposed a government decision to export some four thousand stray cats and dogs. Protesters believe the animals will be sent out for feeding purposes. Here is Adel EL Mahrouky with more.
Cairo is known for the widespread of stray animals.
While the animals are usually harmless, some accidents have sparked controversy over a solution.
Animal rights activists have previously stood against attempts to poins the animals, and during the weekend they protested against a government decision to export some 4100 stray cats and dogs.
SALMA OTHMAN PROTESTER "I see that shelters are the solution, even if they have illnesses they can be taken care of, instead of exporting them to be tortured and eaten. Instead let the shelters then sell them to Egyptians who want to adopt them."
The ministry of agriculture does not request details for the reasons of exportation.
It's role is to maintain that the animals are not subject to extinction and have no disease.
The law in Egypt doesn't obstruct the exportation of stray animals for slaughter or feeding purposes. Nor the destination to which the animals will go, is also required.
