Catalonia police chief Monday confirmed that Younes Abouyaaqoub, a 22-year-old Moroccan-born man, was the driver of a van who rammed into pedestrians at Barcelona's tourist hotspot Las Ramblas last Thursday.
Chief Josep Lluis Trapero said the driver fled from the scene on foot before hijacking a car to escape.
Joaquim Forn from home affairs in Catalonia's regional government said "everything points to that." He also said, the search for the attack suspect who is currently at large would be extended to the entire Europe.
Local authorities also confirmed the 14th victim in Barcelona's attack who was found stabbed to death in a car.
Two separate car ramming incidents took place in Spain last Thursday. The first attack saw a van mowing down pedestrians on Las Ramblas, a busy boulevard in central Barcelona. A few hours later, a car ploughed into pedestrians in the popular seaside resort town of Cambrils, 110km southwest of Barcelona.
