China's military should take solid steps toward a strong army as socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era, said Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC).
Xi made the remarks at a meeting with military officers in Beijing Thursday. He stressed the goal of having world-class armed forces by the middle of the century.
Xi, who is also Chinese president and chairman of the Central Military Commission, said socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era, as have China’s national defense and military building.
He said the People's Army must fully implement the Party’s thinking on strengthening the military for the new era, advance modernization of national defense and armed forces, and transition into world-class units.
Xi said that in the past five years, the Central Military Commission has been upholding absolute Party leadership over the people's armed forces, deepening national defense and army reform, promoting modernization and military and civilian integration, and combating corruption.
