The results of a survey released on Wednesday show that adults in China read 4.66 printed books on average in 2017.
The survey, conducted by the Chinese Academy of Press and Publication, showed that nearly 40 percent of the adults surveyed believe that they haven't done enough reading.
According to the survey, 10 percent of the people surveyed read more than 10 printed books last year, while five percent read more than 10 e-books. People spent an average of 20 minutes a day reading books; 12 percent spent over one hour reading each day. People aged between 18 and 29 had the longest average daily reading time.
Audiobooks and podcasts are also becoming increasingly popular. More than one in five respondents reported having listened to an audiobook or podcast last year.
The survey also looked at the daily amount of time people spend using their cell phones. Adults in China were found to have spent an average of 80 minutes a day on their phones, including 27 minutes a day spent using WeChat, China's most popular messenger app.
