The National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing is once again holding their annual "Roam About the Classics". Themed "Classic Plus", this year's event mixes many music elements together, including classical music, rock and roll, ballet, musical, film and jazz. The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra blew audiences away, as they opened the event with their concert on Wednesday.
Going under the baton of chief conductor, Vasily Petrenko, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra opened their latest action with Modest Mussorgsky's classic -Night on Bald Mountain.
Mussorgsky created a "musical picture", inspired by Russian literary works and legend. It was followed by Sergei Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No.2 in C minor. Young Moscow-born, Israeli pianist Boris Giltburg led the orchestra and wowed audiences with his variety of touch and broad dynamic pallette.
The second half began with Dmitri Shostakovich's Ballet Suite No.1. But the atmosphere saw a sudden change with music from British rock'n roll legends The Beatles. The orchestra played the band's seven classic songs, like Yesterday, All You Need is Love and Hey Jude. The audience joined the performance by singing along -- a mood very different from that of a typical classic music concert. The orchestra gave an encore performance with Chinese folk music, leading to a finale of chorus by audience members.
Since its establishment in 2009, Roam About the Classics has been held every summer with classical music performed in a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere.
