Foreign students enjoyed the Chinese folk opera Huayin Laoqiang and compared it to "Chinese Rock," while on a tour in Xi'an city, northwest Shaanxi Province. Huayin Laoqiang music is high-pitched, loud and resounding, with an air of freedom and casualness. The style has also been dubbed the "earliest rock music" on the Loess Plateau, where most of Shaanxi Province is located. Huayin Laoqiang was listed as China's first national intangible cultural heritage in 2006.
